Maintenance For Your A/C You May Be Forgetting About

Your air conditioner, much like the other appliances in your home, needs to be cared for properly in order for them to keep working as they should. If you fail to maintain them, they will fail you eventually as well. Your system needs some routine maintenance work done that you may actually be able to do on your own. Read on for some of these maintenance tips to get done this year to ensure your system works next year.

Clean The Unit Thoroughly

You need to give your unit a good cleaning each year and throughout the season, as it can quickly accumulate with debris both outside and inside the unit. Clean the unit with a garden hose and sprayer that isn't too strong to clean the unit but without bending the fins on the unit. Open the top portion of the unit to expose the inside, and reach inside to grab and remove leaves and other fallen debris. Cleaning your unit thoroughly ensures your system can breathe easily without all of that dust and dander getting into your home or caught in the fins.

Change The Coil Insulation

The insulation covering the coil outside can eventually rot away. This insulation prevents the coil from sweating and can hinder your air conditioner's ability to cool your home. Replace rotting or torn insulation covering this coil. Foam pipe insulation can be found at your local hardware store. Cut the insulation to size and then slice it down the center. Then cover your pipe with the insulation and use black tape to hold it together on your coil.

Vacuum Vents And Clean Vent Covers

The vents around your home are going to accumulate with debris and dust, as are the vent covers. Clean these often, whenever the seasons change, to prevent excess dust and dander from being blown around in your home. Vents can be vacuumed out, and vent covers can be taken outside to be cleaned with the hose then left to dry in the sun.

Change Filters

Your air filter needs changing every other month, so don't forget to change the filter and replace it with a new one. Forgetting this maintenance task can be costly as a homeowner, as it can cause a complete breakdown of your A/C system. If you aren't sure where to find your air filter or how to change this out, hire an air conditioning maintenance technician to show you how to perform this task.

If you aren't taking care of your A/C system by performing maintenance on it, your system may end up failing you as well. Hire a service company to maintain your unit for you to ensure these tasks are completed and to help your unit continue to run.
